ABOUT

Announcing a two-decade dream: player housing comes to Azeroth

In a surprise reveal during the Warcraft 30th Anniversary Direct, we unveiled the “Housing Teaser” for the upcoming World of Warcraft: Midnight expansion. This wasn't just another feature announcement; it was the realization of a community request nearly twenty years in the making. Working closely with Blizzard, we produced a cinematic that pivots away from the frontlines of battle to show a different side of a hero’s life—the quiet, personal sanctuary where the adventure truly begins and ends.

CHALLENGE

Capturing the soul of a home within a high-fantasy universe

The primary challenge was moving away from the high-octane spectacle of our previous trailers to focus on a single, intimate character moment. We needed to convey the Home Sweet Home sentiment through subtle storytelling: a weary warrior hanging up their shield, a shelf filled with trophies of past victories, and the warm glow of a fireplace. Every asset—from the dragon Onyxia's mounted head to a miniature Goblin shredder—had to be perfectly placed to signal to players that this system is about deep personalization and reflecting their unique journey through Azeroth.

This project allowed us to dive deep into the storytelling potential of environments. By automating our asset pipeline, we were able to spend more time on the 'acting' of the scene—the lighting, the character's tired sigh, and the cozy atmosphere. It's an exciting look at how we're evolving; next year, we'll be integrating AI tools to remove even more of the 'busy work,' allowing our artists to stay focused on these high-value creative moments.

CRAFT

Mastering atmospheric lighting and handcrafted visual storytelling

To achieve the cozy, painterly aesthetic that defines Warcraft’s art direction, we utilized a high-end CGI pipeline centered on Blender and ZBrush. Our focus shifted from large-scale destruction to micro-details: the steam rising from a mug, the flicker of candlelight, and the texture of worn leather. By using Substance Painter for stylized materials and EmberGen for the fireplace's volumetric heat, we created an inviting refuge. Every frame was meticulously color-graded in After Effects to emphasize warm, amber tones, ensuring the teaser felt like a warm embrace for the long-time player.

RESULT

The show-stopping reveal of the 30th Anniversary Direct

The teaser served as the “One More Thing” moment of the anniversary stream, immediately becoming the most talked-about announcement of the event. It successfully sparked a global conversation about the future of the Worldsoul Saga, with the community and game director Ion Hazzikostas alike praising the emotional resonance of the reveal. The video didn't just announce a feature; it set the tone for the Midnight expansion, proving that the heart of World of Warcraft lies as much in its quiet moments as it does in its epic wars.

EXTRA

Hidden details: a love letter to twenty years of Warcraft history

What makes this teaser a favorite for our team is the Easter egg hunt we built into the environment. Because the trailer is a single, slow-moving scene, every prop counts. We carefully curated the interior with iconic weapons and shields from the game’s history, turning a simple room into a museum of a player's life. This project was a testament to our studio's versatility—proving we can handle both the world-shaking fire of Deathwing and the silent, comforting steam of a hero's morning coffee with equal cinematic precision.
